If you color your hair you know the reality of fading. It can happen for various reasons but there are a few things to remember on how to stop your color from fading that’s fairly simple.

First thing we need to know is where the color sits and how to keep it there! For permanent color it’s within the hair structure and the cuticle ( outside layer of the hair ) helps hold the color in and prevent the “color fade” or unwanted shift in tone. It’s important that the cuticle health is maintained and is always closed.

A few things to do are

1. Always condition – this closes the cuticle

2. Use a serum that has UV protection

3. Regular trims remove split ends which will travel up your hair shaft and cause deterioration of the hair health.

3. Possibly the most important is use a sulfate free shampoo. This is a detergent that whilst it is super cleansing it will strip your hair and the color will fade.

The color longevity is determined on a few things which need to be considered, the underlying color of your hair is always going to be key factor in how well your color holds. A head of hair that was blonde 2 months ago will most certainly not hold a color the same as a virgin head of hair having a color for the first time.

Just because you colored over another color doesn’t erase the damage or change the condition of your hair. It may look healthier however the damage is still there. Anyone that has coloured their hair darker will agree as times goes on the red or gold reflect starts to happen making it look very different. Or a clean blonde that appears gold or yellow only week after being done.

The things you do post getting the color done will determine to a large extent the longevity and intensity of the color.
